Some of my earliest memories come from family get togethers at his house, whether for Christmas Eve (some of my favorites) or just to spend time with him and Nana. Papa has been the most consistent presence in my life, right alongside Nana, besides my parents and siblings. He owned every John Wayne movie ever made at one point and checked them off in a book describing the plot, cast, and production of each of his movies. There were hundreds of them spanning decades. Throughout my life, from my earliest memories into my mid-twenties, I would go over to their house on my own, as he enjoyed having each of the grandkids over individually. He would tell me the flavors of ice cream they had at the time. These were displayed in the heroic gunslinger westerns within Wayne’s filmography, such as the Searchers, War Wagon, Rio Bravo, and The Alamo. He also valued the softness of heart needed in men with humility. His favorite John Wayne movie was The Shepherd of The Hills. This is an incredibly unique John Wayne film. The reconciliation and redemption of a man abandoning his family to return and redeem through self-sacrifice makes this one of the most emotional and least “Western” of John’s catalogue. His love for baseball started at an early age. He carried this throughout his life. It was such a unique love for the game where it never translated into watching it. When Papa got into his later years, I have vivid memories of him joining an “old time” baseball league where they would imitate the earlier forms of the game on fields outside in beautiful nature landscapes. As a kid, the thing that stuck out the the most to me from these events was the Sarsaparilla, an antique form of root beer, that if I tasted it today would probably flood me with memories of that time. There’s a photo of Papa, my siblings, and I that I treasure now. Wooo boy,” as he would look through his cards or check the board for how to proceed. I notice this in myself when playing games now. I find myself complimenting the play of the opposing team and I’m currently realizing I saw that modeled throughout my life. He loved checkers, chess, dominos, Canasta, hearts, and most other forms of little gizmo games and gadgets to mess with. One of the ones that he was able to take joy in showing his great grand children was a bird that imitates a woodpecker by using a spring, as it would descend a metal pole looking as though it was pecking the tree. He had the “peg triangle game” where you would try to get it down to one peg left on a triangle of pegs. He loved creation and the God who made it. He would come to all of our sporting events growing up naturally, but even as I gave up sports and began doing open mics and shows for music, he would attend. He wasn’t just into creation from the outside, but loved to interact with it and enjoy it for all that one can through experience. He maintained the child-like wonder throughout his life. When I was in 8th grade, my older brother and I went with them to see a play about creation in Pennsylvania on our way to Hershey’s amusement park. Papa rode on all the rides that my brother and I wanted to go on, even having to convince me to go on a couple of them. He would be in the pool, water park, bumper car, go cart, and any other activity. He was there and as excited as anyone could be. I really miss him. I look forward to seeing him again.
